Free PDF tools.

PDFs often contain information that deserves careful handling: contracts, bank statements, medical forms, identity documents, invoices, and tenancy records.

Many online PDF services upload a document to a remote server for processing. ToolRino’s PDF tools work in your browser instead. The selected file is read into browser memory, pages are copied into a new document, and the result is offered as a download without a ToolRino processing upload.

PDF to JPG is different: it renders each selected page into pixels for an image download. The PDF still stays on your device, but searchable text in the rendered JPG becomes part of the image.

The sections below explain what merging and extracting do, which document features may not survive, and the limits to check before working with an important file.

Merging PDF files

What merging does

The merger copies every page from each selected document into one new PDF, following the file order shown on screen. It copies page content rather than converting each page into a new image, so it does not intentionally recompress page images or turn selectable text into pixels.

Merging is not compression. The resulting size generally grows with the combined source content, but PDF structure and shared resources mean it may not equal the exact sum of the input file sizes. If the result is too large, reducing it requires a separate PDF optimization tool.

What may not survive page copying

A PDF contains document-level features in addition to visible page content. Creating a new document from copied pages can affect:

  • Bookmarks and outlines from the source documents
  • Interactive forms, including field behavior and values
  • Digital signatures, which apply to a specific document state
  • Internal links and annotations that depend on source-document objects
  • Document metadata and attachments outside the copied pages

Static page content is expected to remain visible, but do not assume every interactive or document-level feature was preserved. Open the output and test text selection, links, fields, signatures, and page appearance before sending anything important.

Getting the order right

Files are merged from top to bottom. Every page from one file is appended before the next file begins. Use the arrow controls to arrange the list, merge it, then open the download and confirm where each document starts.

Splitting and extracting pages

PDF positions versus printed page numbers

The splitter uses page positions: the first page in the file is 1, regardless of the number printed on it. A report with a cover and contents page may print “1” on PDF position 3. Check your reader’s page-position indicator when a document contains front matter.

Enter individual positions or ascending ranges such as 1, 3-5, 8. ToolRino creates one new PDF containing the selected pages in the order entered. Duplicate positions are included only once. To create several output files, run separate extractions.

Extraction is not redaction

Extracting pages removes whole pages from the new document. It does not remove information from a page you keep. Text, images, and other copied page content can remain visible or searchable.

Placing a black shape over text is also not reliable redaction unless the software removes the underlying content. Use dedicated redaction software, follow its instructions, and verify the final document by searching for and attempting to select the removed material.

When extraction is useful

  • Sending one section of a report instead of the whole document
  • Separating one invoice from a batch scan
  • Collecting selected manual pages for printing
  • Putting chosen pages into a new order by listing their positions

PDF limits and compatibility

Password-protected files

Encrypted PDFs are not supported. Open the file with its password in a trusted PDF reader and save an unlocked copy only when you are authorized to do so.

File and selection limits

Use up to 30 PDFs, no more than 40 MB each or 100 MB combined. Processing also depends on available browser memory, so a device may reach its practical limit sooner.

Damaged or unsupported files

A file that cannot be parsed is rejected with an error. If it opens elsewhere, try saving a fresh copy from a trusted PDF reader before processing it again.

Scanned documents

Page extraction and merging work with scanned PDFs, but these tools do not perform OCR. Searchable text exists only if it was already included in the source page.

Common PDF-tool questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. ToolRino reads and processes selected PDFs in your browser and does not upload them to a processing server. Download the result before closing or refreshing the page.

Does merging reduce the quality of my PDF?

The merger copies pages into a new PDF rather than rendering them as new images, so it does not intentionally downsample page images or rasterize selectable text. Document-level features may not survive, so check the output.

Why is my merged PDF so large?

The merger combines pages without a PDF-compression step. Output size generally grows with the content in the source documents, although it may not equal their exact combined byte size.

Why don’t the page numbers match what is printed on the page?

The splitter uses positions in the PDF, where the first file page is 1. Covers, contents pages, and front matter can make a printed page number differ from its position.

Does extracting pages remove sensitive information?

Only information on pages you exclude is left out. Everything visible or searchable on a page you keep remains. Page extraction is not redaction.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

No. Use an unlocked copy that you are authorized to access. ToolRino reports password-protected files as unsupported and does not remove passwords.

What are the PDF limits?

You can select up to 30 PDFs for merging, with a maximum of 40 MB per file and 100 MB combined. The splitter accepts one PDF under the same per-file limit. Available browser memory can impose a lower practical limit.

Will filled form fields survive a merge?

Interactive form behavior and digital signatures may not survive page copying. A visible field appearance may differ from a working form field. Always open and test the result before sending an important document.
