How to use JSON Formatter
- 1
Paste a JSON object, array, or other valid JSON value.
- 2
Choose Format for readable indentation or Minify for compact output.
- 3
Copy the result or download it as a JSON file.
Only standard JSON is accepted. Comments, trailing commas, and single-quoted strings are not valid JSON. Very large integers can lose precision when parsed as JavaScript numbers.
When to use this tool
Make compact JSON easier to inspect, or remove unnecessary whitespace before copying it into a request. The tool parses standard JSON and reports syntax errors before producing output. Formatting uses two spaces for each indentation level. It does not validate your data against a schema or check whether an API accepts a particular field.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
Expanding a compact object
- Start with
- {"name":"ToolRino","free":true}
- What to expect
- The formatted result places each property on its own indented line. Minify returns the compact object with no optional whitespace.
Get a better result
- Use double quotes for keys and string values. Remove comments and trailing commas before formatting.
- Keep large identifiers as strings when they exceed JavaScript’s safe integer range; numeric parsing can otherwise lose precision.
Common questions
Does valid JSON have to be an object?
No. Arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null are also valid top-level JSON values.
Can formatting change how my data is represented?
Formatting parses and serializes JSON rather than preserving the original text. Duplicate property names and some number representations can change during this process. Keep a copy of the original.
